OUR STORY

My name is Tierra Harris, I am a single mom to my son Jace Polite. Jace was diagnosed with Autism in January 2020. After being told Jace’s diagnosis, I had no idea where to begin. We tragically lost his father Johnny Polite Jr. in a motorcycle accident four months prior to his diagnosis. I found myself overwhelmed by grief and sadness while trying to figure out what the next chapter of our life would look like. I tried to work, take care of Jace and search for resources. COVID was on the rise and there were not many resource options available. The long waiting list for school enrollment and other resources were out of reach for immediate services needed for Jace. After months of waiting, Jace begin enrollment at Pediatric Plus and services such as speech, occupational therapy and recently began Applied Behavioral Analysis Therapy (ABA). These services have helped him tremendously!

In the state of Arkansas at least one and forty-three children have been identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD) by the Arkansas Developmental Disabilities Monitoring ( AR-ADDM) in 2020. Sensory processing challenges can significantly affect individuals, particularly children with autism and other developmental disorders. These challenges can make everyday experiences overwhelming and stressful. To address this need, I am launching “AuSome Sensory Adventures” a sensory gym which will provide a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for children to explore and develop their sensory skills.

After researching my community and other areas around the state of Arkansas, I realized that there were not many sensory establishments or activities available for children with disabilities to participate in. A few establishments offer “sensory friendly hours” but there is not a place that is just for them.

My goal is to create a space that not only offers sensory integration activities, but that also provides resources and support for single moms like myself and families navigating these challenges.
